Enameling Techniques Workshop

We are really excited about the February workshop: Enameling Techniques. Enameling is a great way to add color to jewelry and metal work. Not only does it produce incredible results, the process is fun as well. In this workshop NCMAG members Erin Austin and Erin House will lead students through basic enameling techniques including choosing and preparing metals and enamels, using the enameling kiln, and finishing enameled pieces. Sifting, Stamping and Champleve enameling techniques will be covered. Each student will leave with at least one finished piece and will have plenty of time for experimentation!

Fun with Cuttle Bone Casting!

Last weekends Cuttle Bone Casting Workshop was so much fun! Erin House started off the workshop with a look at some very inspiring work from metalsmiths using the technique in their work and then we dove right in to making molds. Although this process can be somewhat messy, it's relatively quick and cleans up without too much hassle.

Here students create a flat surface by rubbing two pieces of cuttle bone together and then press objects into the mold. Randy is using a swizzle stick out of his incredible collection that we had a great time looking over. Thanks for sharing Randy!

Next Erin House demonstrated how to melt the metal (the fun part!). We used sterling, bronze, and copper to create several different alloys.

On day two we moved on to three part molds. A bit more challenging, but they allowed for undercuts and a more developed second plane. Here's a two finger ring using a three part mold from the assistant Erin Austin:

And since we had the equipment out, we decided to run next door to the hardware store for a broom so we could try out some broom casting. Everyone agreed that the resulting forms were from another planet (krypton perhaps).

In 2012 we plan on putting on a mini exhibition every month in the NCMAG Studio! Whether the exhibitions work around a theme or feature a guild member, we hope that they will inspire members to create new work and the public to come out and see it. Cuttlebone Casting Workshop

Learn an ancient casting technique using the soft, carve-able bone of the cuttle fish with NCMAG member Erin House. You might recall this technique illustrated at the beginning of The Lord of the Rings, when the infamous ring was made. Students will learn to cut, carve and cast into the cuttle bone. Everyone will make a ring or pendant that showcases the unique texture of the cuttle bone using bronze that will be provided.

Dates: January 21st and 22nd

14th Annual Art, Crafts, Food and Wine Festival

The North Coast Metal Arts Guild will be participating in the 14th Annual Art, Crafts, Food and Wine Festival at the Fieldbrook Valley Winery. This is a fund-raising event that benefits the children of Fieldbrook Elementary School. Come join us for good food, wine, and local arts and crafts. There will be local music and a raffle. We are very excited to announce that the guild has found a home! We are currently busy moving into Hunter Plaid Gallery and Studios in Arcata, California. Please come join us Friday, August 12th during Arts Arcata (6-9pm) to help us celebrate our new location and raise money so that we can better bring the metal arts to our community. A silent auction will be held from 6-8pm and will feature member work, gift certificates for workshops, as well as some other metalsmithing goodies. There will also be baked goods including brownies, rice krispy treats and cup cakes available by donation. All proceeds will go to buying tools and maintaining the space so that we can offer workshops to the community. Workshop schedules, sign up sheets, and membership applications will also be available.

What's new this week: Roller printed earrings by Erin House

One of our member's, Erin House, has some new earrings that we would like to share with you. Erin has incorporated roller printing in some of her other larger pieces in the past, now she is carrying that over into her production lines. The process Erin uses to create the "embossed" look on the metal involves etching a 14 to 16 gauge piece of half hard brass using ferric chloride (chemical salt solution) and rolling that through a rolling mill sandwiched with a piece of sterling or copper. The pressure of the rolling mill imparts the design onto the metal. Keep a look out for a tutorial on this process soon! On May 13th and 14th The North Coast Metal Arts Guild participated in the second annual Humboldt Arts Festival in Arcata, California. This arts, music and dance festival coincides with the graduation ceremony at Humboldt State University, also located in Arcata, California. This is a festival that celebrates local artists of all kinds in Humboldt County California. We had such a good time connecting with the community and other local artists. All four members(Erin House, Erin Austin, Lia Sharp and Jessie Howes) of the guild were there at the festival to sell their wears. There was some great local art represented and for sale at the festival like, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, clothing and some great screen printing too. We met these two hilarious ladies selling screen printed shirts cardigans, and sweatshirts. They call themselves Tease and their stuff is great! There is also an art show at the Ironside Gallery that opened the day of the festival and will be up until June 30th. After the sun went down on the first night there was an amazing fire dancing show complete with three large metal sculptures shooting fire into the air! It was the most incredible fire show I have ever seen.
I included pictures of our booth and our fancy new banner that Erin Austin and her husband Geoff did the graphics for. Also, a picture of our free standing wall that Erin Austin and I (Erin House)made and finished with some great fabric Erin had lying around. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Humboldt Arts Festival! It was a blast!

Member Interview: Lia Liette Sharp

Tell us a bit about yourself

A) I'm really just a big kid. B) I like contradictions/juxtapositions C) Once upon a time my aspiration was fashion design. I got scared and didn't pursue it. Three years later I finally took my first art class and realized I could actually draw a little, but still didn't have a lot of confidence. Six years after that I took my first Jewelry class. I feel like jewelry design/fabrication is the perfect nexus of fashion and art.

Describe your work in one sentence
I like making characters by combining traditional methods/materials with whatever oddness strikes my fancy

What pieces are you most proud of?

I'm currently most proud of what I'm calling 'the Tisha Necklace' because, for the first time, I got my 14 year old son to work on jewelry with me. My favorite pieces tend to change with every new wave of work. I'm really happy with the "Grass is Always Greener" skully (pictured above).

What are you favorite materials to work with?
If I had to name specific things it would be copper, enamel, laminate, and Shrinky Dink Paper- but really my favorite is the unexpected outside object that is different every time. One time it will be an eye from a doll, the next it's 3M orthodontic supplies.

What direction do you see your work going in?

I feel like I'm still 'finding myself' through my art. Framing is here to stay, but the way it manifests will continue to morph. My life is currently is mostly pleasant upheaval, and I myself am uncertain how this will affect my art.

Who or what is your biggest artistic influence?
The accouterments of childhood (toys, plastic hair barrettes, etc.) and retro aesthetics.

What is the best advice you've ever been given?
Work Smarter Not Harder!

If you could add one tool to your collection what would it be?
Sandblaster or vacuum former

What do you listen to in the studio?
I have two in studio playlists. One is composed of Ratatat, Mimosa, Bonobo, Orbital, and Daft Punk. The other is anything I find fun to sing to, from Nina Simone to Electric Six.

What is your most prized possession?
My collection of odd bits of this and that.

Do you collect anything? If so, do you display your collections?
See last Question. The display part happens when they find their place in my work.

How do you spend most of your free time?
I ride my bike, listen to music, and I watch cartoons with my shiny new boyfriend.

What do you wish you were doing with your free time?
I sorta gave up on my monthly coloring books. I'd like to get back to that at some point.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Erin House. I am 31 years old. I have a BA in Studio Art from Humboldt
State University and my emphasis was in Jewelry and Small Metals. I live on the Pacific
Northwest Coast in Loleta, CA. I make jewelry out of my home studio and I try to live
simply and enjoy myself.

2. Describe your work in one sentence.
I strive to create sophisticated and elegant designs while exploring archetypal themes that
can speak to a wide audience.

3. What pieces are you most proud of?
I am not sure which one I am proud of, but my favorite pieces are “Tzab’ek Rattle Ring”
and “Sundial Ring”

4. What are you favorite materials to work with?
I love to work with Silver!

5. What direction do you see your work going in?
I could see myself creating objects or small sculpture. It’s hard to say. I am open to
anything the universe throws at me.

I am influenced by architecture and nature and pretty much whatever I think is visually

7. If you could have your work critiqued by another artist who would it be and why?
Bob Ebendorf. I love his work and he is very respected in the jewelry world.

To change my major from Botany to Studio Art. I am so happy I did!

9. If you could add one tool to your collection what would it be?
I would love to have a Hydraulic Press.

10. What do you listen to in the studio?
I like talk radio, like This American Life. I know it sounds boring, but, that’s what I like.

I have a ring my Grandfather gave to my Grandmother a long time ago and I love it!

I collect antique mirrors, and yes, they are hanging on my walls.

I like to be outside when the weather is nice. I take my dogs to the beach and on walks.

14. What do you wish you were doing with your free time?
Making cool stuff.

15. If you could change one thing about the world what would it be?
I would end all the wars and feed all the people. Maybe that’s two, but that’s what I
would do!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself

I currently live in Eureka, CA with my husband, two cats and a dog, in a cute little house that has the beginnings of a wonderful garden. I started working with metal about 5 years ago while attending Humboldt State University. I entered as a Botany student and in one semester added Studio Art as my second major. Never did finish that Botany degree, but that's another story. I guess I always new my passion was with the arts, but it wasn't until I started working in jewelry that I had the courage to make art my path. Frankly, I'm not sure how I ever lived without metalsmithing in my life. There is something powerful and empowering about transforming a glimmer of an idea captured in a sketch into a three dimension form from a piece of sheet metal.

2. Describe your work in one sentence

The organic meets the inorganic.

3. What pieces are you most proud of?

The pieces I'm most proud of are a series of fold formed rings created for the Ring A Week challenge that were inspired by the art of origami. I really enjoyed pairing the precise nature of origami with the imprecise nature of fold forming.

4. What are you favorite materials to work with?

Right now I'm really enjoying working with mixed metals. If I had to choose, I would say copper is my favorite material because I love to experiment and copper is very forgiving.

5. What direction do you see your work going in?

I think my work is moving toward larger more complex forms that continue to deal with nature and repetition.

6. Who or what is your biggest artistic influence?

Nature and science are my biggest influences. Observing the world around me and understanding how things work is what inspired me to study the sciences and is directly related to metalsmithing in the problem solving and attention to detail that the field requires. The artist that has most influenced my work in Alexander Calder. His kinetic sculptures, wire forms, monumental sculptures and of course his jewelry, have always seemed to me to be the epitome of the observation and translation of the natural world. His hand had the uncanny ability of bringing warmth and life to something cold and lifeless.

7. If you could have your work critiqued by another artist who would it be and why?

I guess I would have to choose Calder for this one. So sad that it will never happen.

8. What is the best advice you've ever been given?

I was once told that perfection is an unrealistic goal. The statement really forced me to evaluate how I view myself and my work. What I took from it was that while there is nothing wrong with striving to improve ones skills, at a certain point it becomes self defeating. There is definitely something to be said for releasing control and enjoying the process of creating and living.

9. If you could add one tool to your collection what would it be?

I go back and forth on this all the time. My wish list is about a mile long! A rolling mill is certainly in the top three.

10. What do you listen to in the studio?

Usually I just listen to the radio or work in silence, but for the last few weeks I've been rocking some Imogen Heap.

11. What is your most prized possession?

This is a tough one. I guess the 'things' that I value most are those that once belonged to others. A watch and a light meter from my grandfather, a pin and a ring from my grandmother, artwork and treasures collected by my mother, and a jar of golf tees, cigar bands, and other mementos collected by my father.

12. Do you collect anything? If so, do you display your collections?

Buttons! Displayed proudly and sorted by color in my collection of bottles.

13. How do you spend most of your free time?

I spend a lot of my free time on the computer reading about this and that. I am in awe whenever I sit back and think about the vast amount of information available at our fingertips. When I'm not online, and it's not raining, I love working in the garden.

14. What do you wish you were doing with your free time?
Traveling. There is so much to experience and time is so fleeting.

15. If you could change one thing about the world what would it be?

I think John Lennon said it best:

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too

Memeber Interview: Jessie Howes

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I was raised in a small town in northern California, and graduated from HSU with a BA in Fine arts. After college, I moved to the little town of Hope, Alaska, where I was surrounded by the Chugach Mountains. After three years of midnight sunshine, and sub-zero winters, I decided to return to beauty and comfort of Northern California's Redwoods and beautiful pacific coastline.

Describe your work in one sentence.
In one sentence, I would describe my work as a reflection of what I find beautiful.

What pieces are you most proud of?
Its hard to choose a favorite material since they all have such different characteristics and effects, but one material that I have been exploring recently is precious metal clay. PMC picks up the softest and most delicate impressions, thus allowing me to incorporate natures delicate patterns into my work.

Who or what is your biggest artistic influence?
My biggest artistic influence was probably my Grandmother. She was an artist herself, a potter, who still creates as much as possible. As a child she was constantly pointing out the beauty that exists in even the most simple objects.

What is the best advice you've ever been given?
The best advice I was ever given was "to follow your heart".

If you could add one tool to your collection what would it be?
If i could add any tool to my collection, it would be probably be casting equipment.

What do you listen to in the studio?
In the studio, I often listen to Gillian Welch, her music is soft and comforting and lends itself well to the creative process.

What is your most prized possession?
My most prize possession is my family. I was blessed with an amazing family, and I value them above all else.

How do you spend most of your free time?
I spend most of my free time outdoors. I believe nature has an incredibly strong effect on the soul, and I try to spend as much time as I can in the woods, at the ocean, on trails, in rivers, and in the sunshine.

If you could change one thing about the world what would it be?
If Could change one thing about the world, it would be to have people recognize the importance of protecting our earth and its resources.

Humboldt Artisan Craft and Music Festival

Better late than never!

What a great experience! It was our first time as vendors and attendees. We will never miss it again! The level of craftsmanship and camaraderie throughout was incredible. Music filled all four buildings for most of each day and varied from singer songwriters with guitars, ukuleles, or accordions, to bands like the Compost Mountain Boys. Vendors carried everything one could possibly want for themselves or the perfect holiday gift including, gorgeous brooms, wooden spoons, ceramics, wooden swords and pvc marshmallow blow guns (the perfect gift for Erin A's brother the lawyer who will always be a child at heart), soaps, blown glass, mushroom growing kits, jewelry, and much much more. People could be seen with their Christmas lists in hand searching for vendors they had visited in years past as well as new artists. Children carried bags of kettle corn as big as they were and the scent of BBQ and the blacksmiths forge filled the air. A wine bar, beer bar, and several dining areas served as perfect places to rest ones feet and enjoy some people watching while sipping something hot and toasty from Ramone's Bakery or enjoying something more substantial from several different vendors. At two dollars (or a toy donation) for entry, it was the perfect way to spend the day during the busy holiday season.

Humboldt Arts Festival and North Coast Open Studios

The 1st (hopefully annual) Humboldt Arts Festival has passed and it was a great time. Two fabulous days of local bands and performers including Samba Amore, West African Dance, the Ya Habibi Dancers, New World Ballet, Strix Vega, The Bucky Walters, and many more kept the foot traffic consistent. The sculpture garden and ceramics demonstration area was awesome. Eel River Brewery was there with four local organic brews and 19 local vendors including the NCMAG offered up a taste of plentiful creativity that the North Coast has to offer.

A big thanks to Geoffrey LaLonde for putting together some fabulous promotional materials and designing a really incredible logo. A big thanks also goes out to everyone who came out to support our local arts community.

And after pausing for a deep breath.... North Coast Open Studios begins this weekend, June 5th & 6th from 11-5pm. If you are in the area please come out to check out the members of the North Coast Metal Arts Guild in action. Four other artist in the Buhne Building (207 G street, Eureka, CA...above the Art Center) will also be open for the event including Frances Kuta Fine Art, Representational Oil Paintings; Karen Merry, Watercolor, pen and ink; Michelle Murphy Ferguson, Oil paintings of landscapes, still lifes, and figures; and Simone Smith, Portraiture, surreal digital montages and mixed media pieces. Reliquary

One of the most important aspects in forming the NCMAG was a desire to inspire, support and learn from each other, a need to branch out from our own studio practices and communicate with other working artists. From the very first meeting we knew we wanted to have "assignments", projects that challenge us artistically and intellectually. Today each member scrawled an "assignment" onto a piece of paper and one was drawn at random:

Wearable Reliquary
-Hollowform fabrication
-Must incorporate at least two metals/materials
-Must use one "new to you" technique

Presentations including research, models and/or drawings are due at the next meeting with projects due for completion on Monday May 31st. Pieces will be up for viewing during North Coast Open Studios June 5-6 and June 12-13 from 11am to 5pm.

So What is a Reliquary?

Reliquaries are often associated with religion. For example, in Christianity they were used to encapsulate the bones or possessions of Christ and the saints, were usually made from precious materials and were often believed to have miraculous powers (Victoria and Albert Museum).

One contemporary jewelry artists working with reliquaries is Becky McDonah, from Arizona State University who celebrates the ordinary and mundane from the act of applying lip gloss to the chore of watering the lawn in her work pieces: "Moistutane: A Reliquary for Chapstick" and "Hunting Nightcrawlers: A Reliquary for Dirt".

The North Coast Metal Arts Guild is proud to announce our participation in the Twelfth Annual North Coast Open Studios. Members of NCMAG will be showing work at 207 G Street # 119 (Buhne Building Artist Studios) on June 5-6 and June 12-13 2010 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
